Two police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana were wounded and a suspect was killed in a shootout Saturday morning.
Officials said that 22-year-old Calvin Smith opened fire on the officers' cruisers with a rifle before being fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire, according to The Advocate.
The incident began after officers were called to 770 Monet Drive around 6 a.m. for a report of damage to a vehicle in the area. After spotting the suspect, Smith fled the scene in a 2013 Dodge Avenger and was pursued until he crashed in front of a home at 5629 Fairfields Avenue, where he had been living.
Smith then climbed out of the car with a rifle and opened fire on the officers, who both returned fire despite their injuries.
Both police officer and Smith were wounded as an estimated 30 to 50 bullets were fired during the incident that spanned a total of six minutes, District Attorney Hillar Moore III told the newspaper.
"How they survived is by the grace of God," he said.
Smith later died after being transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr. said the officers were listed in stable condition. A bullet grazed the side of one officer's head and his partner was injured on his right side when a bullet penetrated the stitching on the side of his vest.
