Two men were convicted Thursday in the killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the Mexican border five years ago.
A U.S. District Court jury in Tucson found Ivan Soto-Barraza and Jesus Leonel Sanchez-Meza guilty in the December 2010 murder of Agent Brian Terry, according to The Arizona Republic.
Both men were extradited from Mexico to stand trial for Terry's death, on counts of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, conspiracy, attempted robbery, carrying a firearm in a violent crime and four counts of assaulting a federal officer.
Guns that were found at the scene of the confrontation between the men and agents were traced to the controversial federal gun-running sting operation called "Fast and Furious."
Terry and three other agents were staked out near Rio Rico, Arizona, 11 miles north of the Mexican border.
Soto-Barraza and Sanchez-Meza were part of a crew searching for drug smugglers to rob. Both had entered the country illegally from Mexico and were carrying semi-automatic rifles. The border agents shouted "Policia" and began firing non-lethal bean-bag rounds, which drew fire.
Terry was shot in the back and died at the scene. One of the crew members was wounded and the others fled.
The wounded member pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Two members of the crew who fled are still at large.
