The officer was conducting a traffic stop around 2:45 a.m. near 12th Street and Campbell Avenue when the incident occurred, according to KNXV-TV.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard told the news station that the officer was struck several times after a gunman opened fire during the traffic stop, but is expected to be OK after his vest saved him. It is unclear if the incident was an ambush.

Officials have located the suspect's vehicle but are still searching for the gunman and a passenger. Officials described one of the suspects as a heavy-set white male who may be armed with a rifle.

There was a large police presence in the area and 12th Street south of Campbell Avenue was closed during the investigation.
