Officials said in a news release that the trooper, identified as Sgt. William Nasuti, was moving the firearm from his old cruiser to his new one when the accidental discharge occurred.

The buckshot sent several projectiles into one of the trooper's legs. He was transported to UMass Medical Center in Worcester for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Colonel Richard McKeon said in a statement he and the department are thankful that Nasuti's injuries were not more serious.

The 51-year-old sergeant has been on the force since 1987 and is currently assigned to Troop H Headquarters in South Boston.

The investigation into the circumstances of the discharge, and compliance with the department's weapons policy, is ongoing.
