The police chief of Pond Creek, Okla. was critically wounded and the suspected gunman was killed outside a home Sunday morning.
Pond Creek Police Chief Tim Barwick responded with other officers to a call about a person outside a home in the 18000 block of U.S. Highway 81 around 6 a.m., according to KOCO-TV.
They found 67-year-old Clifford Butler Jr. acting erratically, claiming that people were in the bushes trying to hurt him.
Officials said that while the officers attempted to subdue the man, he pulled a gun from behind him and shot Barwick at least one time in the abdomen. A Grant County Sheriff's deputy returned fire, killing Butler.
Barwick was taken to a hospital in Enid where he was put in a medically-induced coma and was listed in critical condition.
Barwick has been the chief of police for Pond Creek for about 19 years and is a retired firefighter.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation of the shooting.
