Las Vegas Police Officer Shot During Ambush

Two police officers were stopped at a stop light when a man approached their patrol car and opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun.

A Las Vegas police officer was rushed to the hospital after being shot during an ambush-style attack Sunday afternoon.

Two officers were leaving the scene of a disturbance call and were sitting inside their patrol car at a stop light near Tropicana Avenue and Nellis Boulevard around 12:10 p.m. when a man approached their vehicle and opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun, according to KTNV-TV.

One of the officers was shot in the hand was transported to UMC Trauma where he was listed in stable condition.

The officers exited their cruiser and the uninjured officer pursued the suspect, who dropped his weapon and surrendered.

Officials said they are not sure why the man attacked the officers and is expected to be charged with the attempted murder of a police officer, among other charges.

"That false narrative being spread across this country and the war on police is exactly that, it's false," Undersheriff Kevin C. McMahill told reporters. "These officers go out day-in and day-out to make a difference in this community and there's dozens and dozens of examples every single month where they do just that."

This is the second time a Las Vegas officer has been shot in the line of duty in just a three days. Officer Jeremy Robertson was shot in the upper leg Friday morning when responding to a call Rainbow Boulevard and Alta Drive. Two suspects were taken into custody following a manhunt.
