NYPD officers pursuing a shooting suspect shot and wounded the man after police said he turned and fired "multiple" shots at them, striking a police vehicle, early Friday in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.
None of the NYPD officers involved were wounded by gunfire, though six were transported to local hospitals for treatment of tinnitus, police said.
The suspect, identified only as a 27-year-old man, was struck one time in the left calf, police said. The NYPD said he was transported to Kings County Hospital Center in stable condition.
Police said the incident began at 1:10 a.m., when two plainclothes officers assigned to the anti-crime unit in the 83rd Precinct discovered a 52-year-old man who'd been shot in the arm on Madison Street in Bushwick.
Police said the officer and sergeant, both in an unmarked unit, were given a description of the suspect -- and then saw him fleeing the area.
A canvass ensued. Police said the suspect was spotted on Jefferson Avenue, between Evergreen Avenue and Bushwick Avenue, at which time the suspect turned -- and "discharged his firearm multiple times," the NYPD said, "striking the officers' vehicle." The sergeant and officer returned fire, police said; a foot pursuit ensued.
Uniformed officers from two precincts -- the 81st and the 83rd -- then joined the pursuit and the suspect was wounded in an exchange of gunfire, police said.
A .40-caliber Taurus Millennium handgun was recovered "at the location next to the suspect," police said. The NYPD did not say how many shots were fired -- either by the suspect or by officers.
Four officers from the 83rd Precinct, as well as two plainclothes officers, were taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, while two other uniformed officers from the 81st Precinct were taken to Kings County Hospital -- all, for treatment of tinnitus.
The original shooting victim, the 52-year-old man, was transported to Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens in stable condition.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
