A Knoxville police officer saved by his bulletproof vest last week will return to work Wednesday.
Officer Jimmy Wilson did not sustain serious injuries after his body armor absorbed the impact of the shot fired by Florida fugitive Matthew Pryor on May 20, according to The News Sentinel.
Police Chief David Rausch told City Council members Tuesday night that the 31-year-old officer was at the gun range earlier that day to get re-certified and was preparing to return to work the following day.
Wilson was joined by other officers when he knocked on the door of a motel room shortly after 8 p.m. last Wednesday in search of a man accused of shooting at a Miami-Dade police officer.
As the door swung open, officials said Pryor fired one round at Wilson's chest before slamming the door shut. The officers on either side of the door pulled Wilson to safety after his vest took the brunt of the shot.
Pryor surrendered shortly after the shooting without incident.
He was charged with attempted first-degree murder, being a fugitive, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
