Pa. Police Officer, Boy Become Lunch Buddies

Dec. 10, 2014
Officer Corey Sheaffer joined a boy at his school for lunch after a bet on the basketball court.

A Pennsylvania police officer recently showed that an act of kindness can go a long way and made an unlikely friend in the process.

Northeastern Regional Police Officer Corey Sheaffer was patrolling Mount Wolf Park last week when he saw sixth grader Tyler Hall alone on a basketball court, according to WPMT-TV.

The officer pulled up closer and saw the boy holding a stick in his hand jumping up and down. He walked over to see what the boy was doing and discovered he was trying to get a ball that became stuck in the hoop.

Sheaffer not only got the ball down for the boy, but spent close to 20 minutes talking to him while they played together. While they were playing, the officer challenged Tyler to a bet.

"Before I left I told him if he made a basketball in the hoop I would eat lunch with him and sure enough he made it in the hoop," Sheaffer told the news station.

The officer had lunch with the boy at Spring Forge Intermediate and said that he's just glad he was able to make a connection.

"For the kids to know us on a first name basis is an excellent thing," he said. "They can come up to talk to us, they feel comfortable with us."

Tyler said that he was excited to have a police officer join him for lunch, and that he may consider going into a career in law enforcement himself one day.

"I never had a police officer as a friend, he said. "It's nice to have one."
