On-Duty S.C. Sheriff's Investigator Dies

A Clarendon County, S.C. Sheriff's investigator died Wednesday afternoon following a crash.

Investigator Holmes Smith was returning from a meeting with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division regarding an auto theft case when the wreck occurred, according to WIS-TV.

Sheriff Randy Garrett, Jr. said the 19-year law enforcement veteran's vehicle crashed around 3 p.m. on Highway 521.

Authorities could not provide further details regarding the crash. The investigation is being led by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Holmes is survived by his wife and five children.

"Holmes was most proud of his family and not a day went by when he was not talking about his beautiful wife and children," a post on the Clarendon County Sheriff's Department Facebook page reads. "Our community and entire Sheriff's Office family are grieving over the loss of a man who will be greatly missed."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
