Mo. Deputy, Suspect Killed in Shootout

A Cedar County, Mo. Sheriff's deputy and a suspect were killed during a shootout early Sunday morning.

Deputy Matthew Chism attempted to stop a vehicle for driving with no headlights aound 12:20 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 54 and Missouri 82 when the vehicle failed to yield and a short vehicle pursuit ensued, according to KCTV.

During the pursuit, a passenger exited the fleeing vehicle at the intersection of Hickory and High streets and fled on foot.

The 25-year-old deputy then exited his vehicle and chased the man on foot, leading to a physical altercation and exchange of gunfire.

Chism, a veteran of the force for less than two years, was critically injured and transported to Cedar County Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

"Today we lost a very dear friend, pal, buddy, and family. Matthew was one of the best Deputy a Boss could ask for, and will be greatly missed," Sheriff D. Leon Dwerlkotte posted on his department's Facebook page. "Matt and the rest are like some of my kids. He will always be in our hearts and memory. Keep Heaven safe for the rest of us."

Missouri Highway Patrol officials identified the suspect who fled from the vehicle as William A. Collins. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle involved in the pursuit was located at a home in El Dorado Springs and a 28-year-old man was taken into custody for questioning regarding the incident.

Chism is survived by his wife and child.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
