Texas Deputy Killed Serving Warrant

A Midland County, Texas Sheriff's deputy was fatally shot while serving a warrant Thursday.

Sgt. Mike Naylor and other deputies came under fire after arriving at the home of a suspected child sexual predator on the 3800 block of North County Road 1247, according to KWES-TV.

Sheriff Gary Painter said that there was an exchange of gunfire and that the suspect, 37-year-old Dan Higgins, killed Naylor with the first shot.

Another deputy who was with Naylor was treated at the hospital for breathing issues and is now listed in stable condition.

Officials say that homes in the area were evacuated as Higgins barricaded himself inside the home.

Several agencies attempted to negotiate with the man, who ultimately surrendered to authorities.

Naylor was assigned to the Mental Health Unit and also served as the Honor Guard commander.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
