Because of this, Officer.com and the Commonwealth Criminal Justice Academy present the "Quickfire Weekly Recap."

Here are some of the stories you may have missed that ran on our site this week:

Weekend (Sept. 19-21)

An NYPD officer was killed and eight other officers were injured when a police van crashed Sunday morning in the Bronx.

Officer Michael Williams, who had just graduated from the police academy, was taken to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center where he was pronounced dead.

A Travis County, Texas deputy swept away in a flooded creek Thursday was found dead in Lake Austin on Friday.

Deputy Jessica Hollis was checking a low water crossing to see if anyone was in danger when she reported on her radio that her car was being swept away.

A man scaled the White House fence and made it all the way through the front door before he was apprehended Friday evening.

President Obama and his daughters had just left the White House when the intruder climbed the north fence, ran across the lawn and entered the residence.

A former police chief who helped usher the San Jose Police Department into an era of national prominence in public safety died Friday after his latest bout with cancer.

Joseph D. McNamara, who was currently a research fellow with the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, died in his sleep.

Monday (Sept. 22)

Officials believed they were hot on the trail of a survivalist suspected in a deadly ambush at a Pennsylvania State Police barracks.

Eric Frein is charged with killing one trooper and seriously wounding another on Sept. 12.

The U.S. Secret Service is considering setting up security screening checkpoints near public areas around the White House.

Previous talks have taken on added urgency following an incident Friday in which a man carrying a knife jumped over a gate around the White House and made it into the building.

All five inmates who escaped from the Madera County jail in California were recaptured over the weekend.

Officials said that Roel Soliz was caught Sunday just before 3 p.m., while the other four men were recaptured Saturday night after an anonymous tip.

A government program that distributes military surplus equipment to local law enforcement allows even departments that the DOJ has censured for civil rights violations to apply for and obtain the gear.

The Pentagon, which provides the free surplus military equipment, says its consultation with the Justice Department will be looked during a review of the program.

Tuesday (Sept. 23)

Two suspects were arrested after a Suffolk County, N.Y. police officer was critically injured at traffic stop.

Officials said that Chad Morizsan was the driver of the vehicle that struck and injured Officer Nicholas Guerrero.

A Jackson County, Texas Sheriff's deputy who was pushed off a bridge Saturday was recovering at a San Antonio hospital.

Deputy Bryan Martin underwent surgery to temporarily stabilize the fracture of his left femur, after being pushed at least 18-feet off a bridge early after pulling over a man suspected to be driving while intoxicated.

A UPS employee killed two people before turning the gun on himself inside one of the company's warehouses.

Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper told reporters that the gunman was wearing his uniform when he started shooting at the facility.

A social media frenzy erupted over a flier advertising a course at the St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy in how to deal with reporters.

The flier used the phrases, "Meet the 900-pound gorilla," and "Feeding the animals," as topics to be covered in the Oct. 24 class in addition to a "detailed case study" of the killing of Michael Brown by Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson.

Wednesday (Sept. 24)

A man charged with abducting a missing University of Virginia sophomore was captured in Texas and was awaiting extradition.

Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. was arrested in connection of the disappearance of Hannah Graham on a beach by Galveston County Sheriff's authorities.

An emotional funeral for a fallen Travis County, Texas Sheriff's deputy drew thousands of mourners.

Deputy Jessica Hollis was found dead after her patrol car was swept down a flooding creek last week.

An Ohio grand jury found actions by police officers were justified in last month's fatal shooting of a man holding an air rifle at a Wal-Mart store.

Special Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier said the Greene County grand jury opted not to issue any indictments in the Aug. 5 death of John Crawford III.

New York City police are investigating an altercation between officers and a pregnant woman that was captured on amateur video.

The video shows an officer struggling with the woman who police say tried to intervene in the arrest of her 17-year-old son early Saturday morning in Brooklyn.

Thursday (Sept. 25)

The U.S. Attorney General announced his resignation during a press conference at the White House.

Eric Holder, the nation's first black attorney general, announced his plans to step down after leading the Justice Department since the beginning of President Obama's first term.

More than 160 District of Columbia police officers will wear cameras as part of a six-month pilot program.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that the cameras would enhance safety for officers and the public and make internal investigations more efficient.

A woman punched by a California Highway Patrol officer on the side of a freeway in an incident caught on video will receive $1.5 million under a settlement.

CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow confirmed the settlement and that the officer involved in the incident as resigned.

Friday (Sept. 26)

A FBI report found that the number of shootings in which a gunman fired into a crowd has increased dramatically in recent years.

The study reviewed 160 mass shootings between 2000 and 2013 to identify common themes and to help local law enforcement prepare for or respond to similar killings in the future.

The Justice Department announced this week that the federal prison population has dropped in the last year by roughly 4,800.

It's the first time in several decades that the inmate count has gone down.
