More than 2,000 people attended a memorial service to mark the one-year anniversary.

More than 2,000 people were in attendance at a memorial service Tuesday morning to mark the one-year anniversary of the Washington Navy Yard shooting that left 12 people dead.

Navy Vice Admiral William Hilarides, the commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, read the name of each person who died, which were followed by the toll of a bell, according to WJLA-TV.

The gunman, former Navy reservist Aaron Alexis, was fatally shot by police during the response.

An evening memorial service also is planned where Maryland Congressman Steny Hoyer will speak to honor those who died. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray also is scheduled to attend the ceremony.

President Barack Obama issued a statement remembering the victims.

"As we remember men and women taken from us so senselessly, we keep close their family and friends, stand with the survivors who continue to heal and pay tribute to the first responders who acted with skill and bravery," he said in the statement.
