Kansas Officer Killed; Suspect Arrested

Topeka Police Cpl. Jason E. Harwood was struck by gunfire after pulling over a vehicle on Sunday.

A Topeka, Kan. police officer was killed and his suspected killer was later apprehended on Sunday.

Cpl. Jason E. Harwood stopped a vehicle at Sixth Street and Deer Creek Parkway in East Topeka at around 4:45 p.m. when officials say that Ross P. Lane opened fire, according to The Lawrence Journal World.

Harwood was wounded and was transported to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, where he was pronounced dead at around 5 p.m.

The 15-year veteran of the department is survived by his wife and two children.

Shawnee County Sheriff Herman Jones said that Lane law enforcement that he was in the Lawrence area and wanted to turn himself in. He was apprehended without incident at around 8 p.m. before be brought him back to Shawnee County for questioning.

Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident, as there may have been multiple individuals in the vehicle that Harwood stopped.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
