A Los Angeles County sheriff's detective was injured during a shooting in Lynwood on Tuesday, but the extent of the injury was not immediately known, officials said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said the incident unfolded when two detectives from Century Station went to an apartment building in the 12000 block of Santa Fe Avenue for an investigation.

A suspect opened fire and the detectives returned fire. One detective, a 17-year veteran in his 30s, was shot in the arm and taken to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

The suspect in the shooting was killed and a weapon was recovered after he was barricaded in a nearby residence, sheriff's officials said Tuesday evening.

SWAT and crisis negotiators swarmed the scene during the barricade, and the surrounding area was evacuated.

Lindbergh Elementary had also been on lockdown.
