A Phoenix police officer is currently caring for five newborn kittens found abandoned in a dumpster late last month.

Officer Heather Krimm was among those who responded to an animal cruelty call in the area of 3800 West Camelback Road around 8 p.m. on July 27, according to a department news release.

Krimm attempted to place the kittens with a local Emergency Animal Clinic, but the clinic could not take them. That's when the officer decided to take them home and care for them herself.

The decision was made in consult with the Arizona Humane Society and with the approval of her supervisor. She will care for the kittens until a foster family can be found and they can be put up for adoption.

Police aren't sure how long the kittens were in the dumpster or who may have placed them there.
