Vermilion Parish Deputy Allen Barres was killed as he was investigating suspicious activity.

A Vermilion Parish, La. Sheriff's deputy was killed Monday as he was investigating suspicious activity he observed while off duty.

Deputy Allen Barres was fatally shot around 4 p.m. on South Hospital Drive after he called in to report what he saw while mowing grass on his day off, according to The Advocate.

He was transported to Abbeville General Hosptial, where he succumbed to his injuries.

On Tuesday morning, Louisiana State Police officials announced the arrests of Quintylan Richard, 20, and Baylon Taylor, 19, in Barres' death.

A witness reported seeing a gold Lexus crash into a nearby ditch and two men fleeing the area in the deputy's pickup truck. Investigators later found the truck abandoned off Miles Street in Abbeville.

"It’s a very sad day today, as we lost a veteran brother in law enforcement, a husband, a father and a child," Sheriff Mike Couvillon said in a statement. "We are utilizing every available resource and will not rest until these dangerous criminals are apprehended and brought to justice."

Barres had worked for the Vermilion Sheriff's Office twice, mostly recently since 2006. In between, he worked for the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office.
