Riverside County Sheriff's K-9 Tessa was accidentally shot in the paw by responding deputy.

A Riverside County, Calif. Sheriff's K-9 was accidentally shot in the paw by a deputy on June 13.

Officials say that K-9 Tessa is recovering at her handler's home after being wounded while searching for a man who escaped custody near Lake Elsinore, according to KNBC-TV.

Deputies were searching for 45-year-old Shawn Redding, who escaped after being arrested for multiple outstanding warrants.

Tessa was with her handler when a pit bull jumped out a home's open window and attacked her. Another deputy fatally shot the attacking dog, but also wounded Tessa in the process.

One round hit the K-9's right paw and she had to be taken to a veterinary hospital for emergency treatment.

Officials said Tessa's recovery is promising and she should be able to return to work.

Redding was arrested Saturday and booked into the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Southwest Detention Center.
