Two Dallas County, Texas Sheriff's deputies had a close call after one was nearly struck by a suspected drunken driver while dealing with another suspected drunken driver.
Sgt. Roy Wallace and Deputy Mayo Loza were dealing with a traffic hazard on I-35 shortly before 5 a.m. on June 8 when the incident occurred, according to KDFW-TV.
The Wallace found a man asleep at the wheel at a dead stop while still in drive in the fast line of the highway and waited for Loza to arrive. Dashcam video shows the two deputies discuss what they plan to do.
"We're talking about what we're gonna do to get the car in park before the person wakes up, that way he won’t react to us waking him up and take off," Loza told the news station.
Loza approaches the driver's side as Wallace goes to the passenger side. Wallace then turns to look at approaching traffic and screams, "Watch out, Loza!”
Loza had to run to safety as another suspected drunk driver sped by at approximately 100 miles per hour.
"As soon as he screamed, I looked back and saw sparks from the vehicle," Loza said. "And I don't know what happened, but at the last second, to avoid my vehicle that was behind Sgt. Wallace’s vehicle, he went over to the left shoulder, hit the wall. And when I looked back, I just saw sparks in the air. That’s when I just ran to the front of the vehicle."
The deputies then performed field sobriety test on both men and took them into custody.
