June 08--For the second time in a month, a shoplifting incident at the Harrison Road Wal-Mart turned into a serious situation early Saturday.
Two people suspected to trying to take a TV from the store shortly after midnight fled in a vehicle and led Bibb County deputies on a lengthy chase. The chase ended when a state trooper executed a pit maneuver and spun out the car, said Deputy Clay Williams, Bibb Sheriff's Office public information officer. No one was injured.
Aparis Unique Higgs, 28, of Atlanta, was the driver of the vehicle and allegedly steered toward a pursuing deputy, Williams said. She was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer engaged in official duty, fleeing and attempting to elude, theft by shoplifting and criminal trespass.
Her boyfriend, Jamar Antonio Wilmer, 28, of Decatur, was charged with theft by shoplifting and criminal trespass. The criminal trespass charge, Williams said, is because the two had been banned from entering any Wal-Mart store due to past incidents.
Williams said Higgs initially stopped when first approached by a deputy on Eisenhower Parkway at the Interstate 75 exit, then took off and sped down the interstate, down Ga. 96 into Fort Valley, and down Ga. 49 back toward Byron. The state trooper spun her out at Ga. 49 and Ga. 247.
On May 10, a man suspected of shoplifting at the same Wal-Mart pulled a knife on a loss-prevention officer and held it to the officer's neck before fleeing. He was also chased down and arrested by Bibb deputies.
