A Missouri City, Texas police officer went over the edge of a bridge after a vehicle rear-ended his cruiser early Friday.

Officer Kenneth Lewis and his partner were conducting a traffic stop in the 7200 block of State Highway 6 shortly after midnight when another vehicle slammed into the back of their patrol car, according to KHOU-TV.

The cruiser was pushed into the vehicle the officers had stopped and Lewis was sent falling close to 30 feet down off of the bridge.

The officer was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital and rushed into surgery. He was listed in serious, but stable condition.

Officials said that Lewis, who had been with the department for three months, was conscious and communicating with paramedics at the scene. His partner was not injured.

The person who was inside the vehicle for the initial traffic stop was also injured and was taken to a local hospital.

The driver who caused the crash was taken into custody for suspicion of DWI.
