Here are some of the stories you may have missed that ran on our site this week:

Weekend (April 25-27)

A Montgomery County, Md. Police detective who had his children with him as part of "Take Your Kids to Work Day," was hailed as a hero after he helped rescue a woman from a fatal house fire.

Detective Mario Mastrangelo had his fourth and seventh grader with him during his morning commute when he saw smoke coming from a colonial-style home.

A man convicted of murdering a Georgia State Police trooper was sentenced to life without parole on Friday.

Gregory Favors fatally shot Trooper Chadwick LeCroy during a routine traffic stop on Dec. 27, 2010.

A 16-year-old high school student was fatally stabbed inside her high school Friday after witnesses say she turned down a boy's invitation to the prom.

Students gathered for a candlelight vigil that night instead of attending the prom, which was postponed indefinitely.

Wisconsin National Guard officials continue to press local law enforcement to try alternative approaches when confronted with military veterans suspected of criminal offenses.

Officials say that police and prosecutors can obtain better results by connecting an offender to one of the programs available to veterans with substance abuse or other mental health problems.

Monday (April 28)

A Spotsylvania County deputy died after collapsing during a morning workout session.

Deputy Bryan Berger was taking part in physical fitness training at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy when he began experiencing shortness of breath during a calisthenics exercise.

One year after the city of Camden, N.J. disbanded its police department and brought in a new one, reported crime has dropped significantly.

The new county police force has more officers on the street performing intensive neighborhood patrols.

The Albuquerque Police Department will increase its crisis intervention training this year in an attempt to certify all field officers in the force.

The change comes after the Department of Justice recommended as part of a report that found officers used force unconstitutionally.

Florida law enforcement authorities are set to begin a public awareness campaign to fight the effort to legalize medicinal marijuana.

The Florida Sheriff's Association sent sheriffs across the state an email recently asking for their support of a resolution opposing the legalization of marijuana.

Tuesday (April 29)

A Mesa, Ariz. police dog is recovering following a weekend standoff that left a burglary suspect dead.

K-9 Jake was stabbed several times during the confrontation Saturday night with Chad Bogle, who died from gunshot wounds following an exchange of gunfire.

Rangers found a father and his two children who had been missing for more than two days in Congaree National Park in South Carolina.

J.R. Kimbler, his 10-year-old son, Dakota, and 6-year-old daughter, Jade got lost after taking to the trails on Saturday afternoon for what was intended to be a short hike.

A package handler opened fire at a FedEx station outside Atlanta, wounding at least six people before police found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Three of the victims were in critical condition, two with life threatening injuries, following the rampage.

Wednesday (April 30)

A prosecutor's father who was kidnapped from his North Carolina home wrote a letter thanking the elite FBI team that rescued him.

Authorities say the kidnappers in early April held Frank Janssen in an Atlanta apartment, sending text messages to his family and threatening to cut him into pieces.

Several Colorado sheriffs will no longer honor requests from federal immigration authorities to continue to detain someone once they are eligible to be released.

The move comes in the wake of recent court decisions in Oregon and Pennsylvania that found that such detainer requests from ICE are not commands that local jurisdictions have to abide by.

A former employee opened fire at a British Columbia lumber mill, killing two people and injuring two others.

A 47-year-old suspect was arrested for allegedly shooting people in the parking lot area and then in the mill office.

Thursday (May 1)

Two Alaska State Troopers were killed while conducting an investigation.

Sgt. Patrick "Scott" Johnson and Trooper Gabriel "Gabe" Rich were both fatally shot and a suspect was taken into custody.

An apparent gas explosion rocked a Florida jail, killing two inmates and injuring as many as 150 people.

The Escambia County Jail was almost completely destroyed by the blast.

While hundreds of demonstrators marched in Seattle on May Day, a smaller group of masked protesters kept police busy at night.

Police said they arrested nine people during the evening protest.

Friday (May 2)

An Anaheim, Calif. police dog shot in the face during a confrontation with an armed suspect was set to go home after weeks of treatment.

Officer R.J. Young said he would be taking K-9 Bruno home and would take over his medical expenses.

Experts say that crowdsourcing can give law enforcement a secure, central repository for the countless electronic tips that can come in during a crisis.

A new tool know as LEEDIR, the Large Emergency Event Digital Information Repository, pairs an app with cloud storage to help police use smartphones as tools to gather evidence.
