New Jersey Police Officer Critical After Crash

Officer Daniel Breslin was critically injured after he his SUV was struck by an alleged drunken driver.

A Bergen County, N.J. police officer was critically injured after he his patrol vehicle was struck by an alleged drunken driver early Saturday.

Officer Daniel Breslin underwent surgery for a fractured skull and bleeding following the crash with Michael Ettz shortly before 2 a.m. on Route 46, according to The Star-Ledger.

The 39-year-old married father of two underwent surgery after the wreck and remained in critical condition with a severe head injury at Hackensack University Medical Center.

The officer had stopped his marked SUV to assist fellow Officer Frank Canaje, who was having radio problems. The officers were talking while inside their vehicles when a black 2012 Ford Fusion, driven by Ettz, crashed into the back of the Breslin's SUV, which had its emergency lights were on before the collision.

Canaje radioed to headquarters and removed Ettz from his vehicle before he fled into a nearby neighborhood. He was later apprehended by a Lodi police officer, treated for injuries at the hospital and held at the Bergen County Jail on $100,000 bail.

Breslin was extricated from his wrecked patrol vehicle and rushed to the hospital.
