Wounded Florida Sheriff's Deputy Returns Home

April 14, 2014
Taylor County Deputy Robert Lundy was wounded by a gunman at a car dealership in Perry on Feb. 5.

A Taylor County, Fla. Sheriff's deputy shot by a suspect returned home Friday, more than two months after the incident.

Deputy Robert Lundy was was getting his patrol car serviced when he was wounded by a gunman who opened fire at the Timberland Ford dealership in Perry on Feb. 5, according to The Democrat.

Police say that dealership employee Earl Edward Clague Jr. Clague drove his truck through the front of the building and opened fire, hitting Lundy and two other employees.

Lundy attempted to stop that gunman and was shot in his abdomen during the exchange of gunfire. Clague died in the shootout.

Supporters lined the street outside Lundy's home and awaited his arrival in Steinhatchee, placing banners on his home that read "Welcome Home, Our Hero."

Investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement credited Lundy from preventing further injuries in the rampage.

The recovery process has been long for Lundy, who was left permanently blind in one eye. His wife, Kelly, has been traveling the more than one-hour trip to the hospital in Gainesville every while also taking care of the couple’s two young girls, Emily, 8, and Allison, 3.

After Friday's milestone, there will likely be years more of therapy and healing for the deputy -- both physically and mentally. Following the shooting he was in a coma for weeks, but has made considerable progress and is now walking and talking on his own.
