Puerto Rico Police Officer Dies

Agent Marelis Santiago Morales, who was seriously injured in a crash on April 4 succumbed to her injuries.

A Puerto Rico police officer seriously injured in a wreck on April 4 died on Wednesday.

Agent Marelis Santiago Morales, 32, was traveling on the Luis A. Ferré Highway when the crash occured, according to El Nuevo Dia.

The agent was transported to Rio Piedras Medical Center for treatment of a hip fracture and severe abdominal trauma. Officials say her condition worsened despite seeing an initial improvement following the crash and was removed from life support.

The cruiser Santiago Morales was in, driven by Agent Betsy Cruz Gonzalez, was struck by an alleged distracted driver who police say was sending a text message at the time of the crash.

Gonzalez Cruz remains hospitalized at the Rio Piedras Medical Center.

The 11-year veteran of the force is survived by her husband, Michael S. Monsegur Morales and their three children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
