Officer Brent Maddocks, 25, was conducting the stop near Whitlock Packaging around 7 p.m. Tuesday. For an unknown reason, Jessica Lugo, 26, who was outside the plant in the smoking area, walked over and stabbed Maddocks in the back, Vernon said.

Maddocks was wearing a protective vest and did not suffer any injuries.

"Got him on the edge of the vest," Vernon said.

Vernon said Maddocks initially was going to react to the stabbing by pulling his gun, but instead holstered his weapon because the vehicle he had pulled over was nearby and had two children inside.

Maddocks, instead, chose to use his Taser to incapacitate Lugo "while he was retreating, and she was attempting to attack him," Vernon said.

Lugo was arrested and booked into the Muskogee County/City Detention Facility on a complaint of assault and battery with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

Officers do not know why Lugo stabbed Maddocks.

"My officer didn't know the suspect," Vernon said.

Police said there was no correlation between the traffic stop and the stabbing.

"It was out of the blue," Vernon said.

Police are deciding when Maddocks will return to work.

"We are evaluating it right now," Vernon said.
