FORT WORTH, Texas -- Three patrol officers responding to a major traffic accident pulled a driver out of a burning vehicle involved in a crash on Northwest Loop 820 early Thursday, police said.

The vehicle was on fire when the officers freed the trapped motorist and a civilian who was riding along with one of the officers used a fire extinguisher from a patrol car to help put out the blaze, police Capt. Shawn Stone said.

The driver was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in unknown condition. No other injuries were reported.

"These officers conducted themselves admirably and without hesitation to rescue the trapped driver," Stone said in an e-mail Thursday.

Police officials have not released the names of the officers or the civilian.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the major wreck shortly before 2:30 a.m. to the 2500 block of Northwest Loop 820 at Marine Creek Parkway.

The vehicle had been traveling westbound on the loop when it hit a guardrail, vaulted over it and landed on a roadway embankment, according to police reports. Police had not released any information on what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The vehicle was overturned and on fire when officers arrived, Stone said.

Within seconds, officers successfully pulled the driver out of the vehicle, aided by the civilian, police said.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the blaze.
