A Waverly man is in the Bradford County Jail after he resisted arrest early Saturday morning, injuring police officers in Sayre Borough.
Borough police arrested Jesse C. Carling, 23, and charged him with four counts of simple assault, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count each of defiant trespassing, disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and resisting arrest, according to a criminal complaint filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw's office.
Police said Carling and Zachary M. Ward, 23, of Sayre, were arrested Saturday after attempting to force their way into the Flat Iron Bar on North Lehigh Avenue after it had closed.
Police charged Ward with public drunkenness, resisting arrest, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct, according to a criminal complaint.
Officers were dispatched to the bar at about 2:32 a.m. Saturday, where staff still inside the establishment said Carling and Ward were attempting to force the door open and threatening employees. Carling and Ward fled from the scene by foot after police arrived, police said.
Officers stopped the two and attempted to place both into custody, police said. Ward gave police a false name, refused to provide identification to police and repeatedly pulled his arms from officers attempting to handcuff him, police said.
Police also struggled to place Carling into custody, and he refused to enter the patrol vehicle and pushed his feet against the door opening, police said.
Carling became angry and belligerent inside a holding cell at the police station and began to scream and hit his head on the metal door frame, police said. An officer opened the holding cell door in order to restrain Carling to a bench, but Carling pushed the officer in the chest with both hands and knocked him into a work station, according to police.
Carling then put his hands on the officer's neck, causing scratches, and punched him in the head and face, according to police.
Officers then deployed a stun gun on Carling and placed restraints on him, police said. Carling continued to kick and fight while being placed back in the holding cell. During the struggle, one officer injured his right hand and was later transported to Robert Packer Hospital for swelling and blackness in the hand and possible ligament damage, police said.
A bleeding wound on Carling's face was cleaned and treated by paramedics from Greater Valley EMS, police said.
Carling and Ward were both arraigned March 15 by Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton and remanded to the Bradford County Jail, Carling in lieu of $40,000 bail and Ward in lieu of $15,000 bail. Both are scheduled to appear in district court for preliminary hearings March 25.
