Puerto Rico Police Officer Killed in Shootout

Agent Joaquín Correa-Ortega was fatally wounded while Sgt. Victor Perez was shot in the head.

A Puerto Rico police officer was fatally shot while working undercover Monday night.

Agent Joaquín Correa-Ortega, 36, was shot and killed while conducting an undercover arms purchase in a wooded area off of PR-924 in Humacao, according to El Nuevo Día .

Police officials said that Correa-Ortega and Sgt. Victor Perez were in the conducting a transaction at a dairy where illegal trade for cars, horses and guns are often made when gunfire was exchanged.

Correa Ortega, a 12-year veteran of the department assigned to the Criminal Intelligence Unit, died at the scene while Perez was transported to a hospital for treatment of a bullet wound to his head and was listed in stable condition following surgery.

Three suspects have been arrested, while a four man died in the shootout.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Correa-Ortega is survived by his wife and one child.
