Four Indianapolis Officers Shot, Suspect Killed

Officials credited bulletproof vests with preventing any serious injuries to the officers Wednesday night.

Four Indianapolis police officers were wounded in a shootout Wednesday night that left a suspect dead.

Officials credited bulletproof vests with preventing any serious injuries to the officers who were attempting to serve a search warrant for drugs at a Near-Eastside home around 7:41 p.m., according to The Indianapolis Star.

Members of the Special Weapons and Tactics unit had knocked on the door of a home in the 1600 block of South State Avenue when police say the suspect, 27-year-old Andrew Sizemore, began shooting at them from inside.

Sizemore was killed in the exchange of gunfire. There were four other people inside the house; none of them was injured.

One officer was treated at the scene of the shooting and released while two officers were transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital and another was taken to Eskenazi Hospital. Their injuries were said to be not life-threatening.

Police Chief Rick Hite said the officers acted professionally and were responding to a tip to serve a warrant to residents of a home that was known to sell drugs in the neighborhood.

"We're sorry about the loss of life," he told reporters. "But you cannot sell drugs and do violence in this city and not expect police to do something about it."
