ANSONIA, Conn. -- A Seymour man allegedly tried to run over a police officer following a motor vehicle stop Saturday in Ansonia.
Maurice "Mo" Beall, 33, of Riverside Drive, tried to run over Officer Joe Jackson, police said. In response, Jackson fired his weapon at Beall, causing him non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the abdomen and left arm.
Beall has been charged with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with police, assault on a police officer, evading responsibility and driving without a license.
Beall attempted to run over Jackson after the officer stopped him to investigate a hit-and-run accident on Saturday afternoon, said Lt. Andrew Cota, the Ansonia police spokesman.
At the time, officers were investigating a motor vehicle accident on the Maple Street Bridge, in which one of the drivers involved fled the scene, police said.
While Jackson was interviewing Beall, he allegedly tried to run over Jackson with his car in an attempt to flee, police said.
Jackson then fired his weapon at the suspect, Cota said. Beall was found in Derby a short time later and transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. After treatment, Beall was released to the custody of the Ansonia police.
Beall is a felon, police said, with narcotics and assault convictions. The Connecticut State Police are investigating the police-related shooting, Cota said.
