N.M. Officers Pull Woman From Fiery Wreck

Police Officers John Cervantes and Salvador Hurtado and Sgt. Mark Valarde helped rescue Kelly Atsye.

An Albuquerque police officer was treated for burns after he and two other officers pulled an injured woman from a burning car after it crashed into a pole Sunday at Grant Middle School.

Officer John Cervantes was treated at a hospital for burns and released Sunday after the three officers broke the vehicle's windows to remove the unconscious driver and used fire extinguishers to fight flames inside the vehicle, police said.

The driver, Kelly Atsye, 23, remained in stable condition Tuesday, police spokeswoman Tasia Martinez said in a written statement. No charges had been filed Tuesday. The accident remains under investigation.

Officers Salvador Hurtado and Sgt. Mark Valarde were the other officers who helped extract Atsye.

The vehicle was on fire, and the interior was filled with smoke when officers arrived early Sunday morning, Martinez said.

"Officers risked their own safety to remove the woman, who was not only unconscious but was trapped with her foot pinned," Martinez said. "Despite the difficulty and physical pain of reaching into a burning fire, officers successfully removed the woman from the vehicle."
