A Toronto police constable died Monday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a cruiser crash over the weekend.

Constable John Zivcic, 34, was responding to a call about an impaired driver when he collided with another vehicle Saturday afternoon near Bloor Street West and Neilson Drive, according to CBC News.

Zivcic was thrown from his cruiser and suffered severe head injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Officials said that Zivcic died at the hospital shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday after undergoing multiple surgeries and was surrounded by members of his immediate family.

"It’s a terrible day for the Toronto Police Service," Toronto Police Association president Mike McCormack said. "Our hearts are broken for John’s family."

Zivcic was a member of the Toronto Police Service for more than six years. He is survived by his mother, as well as his brother and sister and their spouses.

Arrangements were being made for the officer's organs to be donated.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
