San Antonio Police Officer, Suspect Wounded

Nov. 11, 2013
Officers were attempting to detain a man reported in mental distress when he resisted Sunday afternoon.

One San Antonio police officer was shot in the leg and another was injured in an altercation Sunday at a North Side emergency center.

A male suspect also was shot in the abdomen during the incident at the Christus Santa Rosa Emergency Center at Alon Town Centre, police said. The two officers and the suspect are expected to recover.

The officers, identified as Yvette Meade and Roberto Aguilar, were responding to the emergency center about 1 p.m. after getting a report about a man in mental distress.

Police said that when the officers attempted an emergency detention, the man -- described by authorities as being "very large in stature" -- resisted.

An emergency detention allows officers to conduct a preliminary mental health evaluation when they believe a person is a threat to themselves or others, but there is no cause to get an arrest warrant.

The officers used a stun gun on him, but it had no effect. The suspect hit Meade in the face, knocking her out briefly, police said.

The suspect and Aguilar then fought over Aguilar's gun. During the struggle, the officer was shot in the leg, police said.

At that time, Meade regained consciousness and shot the suspect in the torso, which caused him to stop fighting.

Aguilar and the suspect were taken to University Hospital, where both were stabilized. Aguilar, a five-year veteran of the force, also had injuries to his face.

Meade, an eight-year veteran of the force, was treated at the emergency center for facial lacerations and released.

The officers involved will be placed on temporary administrative duty as outlined in the department's protocol in officer-involved shootings.

The suspect's name has not been released.
