Texas Chief Dies After Accident at Police Department

Gainesville Chief Steven Fleming was working in the evidence building when he fell off of a ladder.

The Gainesville, Texas police chief died Friday after from injuries he sustained in an accident at the department a week ago.

Police Chief Steven Fleming, a 22-year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead around 12:30 p.m., according to KXII-TV.

Fleming was working in the department's evidence building when he fell off of a ladder on Oct. 25.

The 44-year-old began his career with the Gainesville Police Department in 1991 and moved up the ranks before becoming police chief in 2008.

Capt. Kevin Phillips has been appointed as acting chief of the department.

"The biggest impact, it was the integrity factor," Gainesville City Manager Barry Sullivan said. "Things were black and white. If there was an issue he would address it directly."

Fleming is survived by his wife and daughter.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
