Illinois Police Officer, K-9 Killed After Crusier Struck

Pontiac Officer Casey Kohlmeier and his dog, Draco, were killed after being struck by another vehicle.

A Pontiac, Ill. police officer and his K-9 partner were killed Wednesday night when their cruiser was struck by another vehicle.

Officer Casey Kohlmeier and his dog, Draco, were in their marked police vehicle in a median turnaround on I-55 in Livingston County when they were hit shortly after 9:30 p.m., according to The Pantagraph.

Both the 29-year-old officer and the K-9 were pronounced dead on the scene while the driver of the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital.

"It's a sad day here," Mayor Bob Russell told the newspaper. "I've been on the phone all morning. It's just devastating."

Kohlmeier has been a member of the Pontiac Police Department since January 2007 and is survived by his parents and family members.

The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.
