Illinois Police Chief Collapses, Dies During Response

Hawthorne Park District Acting Police Chief Nick Colabufo suffered a heart attack responding to a call.

The acting police chief of the Hawthorne Park District Police Department suffered a fatal heart attack on Oct. 20 while responding to a call.

Acting Police Chief Nick Colabufo collapsed after being called to a reported disturbance at the Hawthorne Sports Complex in Cicero, according to The Officer Down Memorial Page.

Colabufo was pronounced dead a short time after suffering the medical emergency.

The 52-year-old served as a part-time police officer with the Hawthorne Park District for several years. He also served with the Cook County Sheriff's Office for 30 years, where he held the rank of assistant chief.

He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
