Naval Station Police Detective Fatally Struck

Newport, R.I. Naval Station Detective Frank J. Lema Sr. was fatally struck by a Thursday afternoon.

A police detective at the Newport, R.I. Naval Station was fatally struck by a Navy vehicle Thursday afternoon.

Detective Frank J. Lema Sr. was hit around 1:30 p.m. and was transported Newport Hospital before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where he was pronounced dead around 10:15 p.m., according to The Providence Journal.

Lema had served with the Naval Station Newport Police Department for 21 years after retiring as a captain with the Middletown Police Department.

Lema is survived by his five children.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Frank's family during this difficult time," Commanding Officer Captain Douglas Mikatarian said in a statement. "Detective Lema was a highly respected and admired member of our Navy family and he will be sorely missed."

Additional details will be released once the investigation into the incident is completed.
