An Indianapolis police officer, who was fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call on Sept. 20, was laid to rest Thursday.

Officer Rod Bradway was remembered by colleagues, family members and public officials who shared stories about him during his funeral at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, according to WISH-TV.

Thousands gathered to honor the man who was not only an officer, but a husband, father, firefighter and a youth soccer referee.

"No one in this city will ever wonder whether Officer Bradway made a difference," Indianapolis Mayor Ballard said during the service. "We all mourn his loss."

A procession followed, stopping at the Wayne Township Fire Department, where he was a firefighter, and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's northwest district.

Graveside services at Crown Hill Cemetery included the folding of an American Flag handed to Bradway's family and officers put white carnations on Bradway's casket.
