Howard County Police Officer Neil White was injured during a traffic stop late Monday night.

A Howard County police officer was injured during a traffic stop on the side of a highway in Marriottsville, Md. late Monday night.

An oncoming vehicle crashed into Officer Neil White's parked patrol vehicle on the shoulder of I-70 shortly after 11:37 p.m., according to The Baltimore Sun.

The 38-year-old officer was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he was listed in stable condition.

White, a 10-year veteran of the department, pulled over a 2013 Ford Focus for a traffic violation before a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck struck his cruiser from behind, forcing it into the Focus.

The driver of the pickup truck and the driver of the Focus were both uninjured in the crash.

Police say the pickup truck's driver, 20-year-old Curt Michael Smith, may have fallen asleep at the wheel before the collision.

The crash is currently under investigation.
