Draper Police Sgt. Derek Johnson was found fatally wounded in his cruiser early Sunday morning.

A Draper, Utah police officer was killed and two other people were critically wounded early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Derek Johnson was found fatally wounded in his cruiser in the 13800 block of Fort Street around 6 a.m., according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Responders pulled the 32-year-old officer from the vehicle and tried to save him, but were unsuccessful.

Johnson was flown to Intermountain Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

"This is a very tragic day for the Draper city police department" Police Chief Bryan Roberts said at a news conference.

A man and a woman were also wounded and were transported to local hospital in critical condition. Police say they were in a collision and that Johnson approached their vehicle. An armed man inside the vehicle ambushed the officer, who attempted to drive away.

He continued to fire on him, causing Johnson to crash into a tree. Officials say the man also shot the woman before turning the gun on himself.

Johnson was a nine-year veteran of the police department and was promoted as a sergeant December of last year.

He is survived by his wife and their young son.

The incident is currently under investigation.
