Miss. Police Officer Fatally Struck on Highway

July 22, 2013
Jackson Officer Bruce Jacobs was struck and killed while removing a barbecue grill from a highway.

A Jackson police officer was fatally struck Saturday while removing debris from a highway.

Officer Bruce Jacobs responded to a call around 1:30 p.m. for a barbecue grill in the middle of Interstate 55, according to The Clarion-Ledger

Jacobs was loading the grill in his trunk when a motorist struck him and his vehicle from behind.

The five-year veteran of the department was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

"It’s always tough to lose anyone, and not just the death of an officer but even an injury," Chief Lindsey Horton said. "We knew and we know that this job is very dangerous. He was a public servant doing what we do when we receive calls for service."

The driver was injured and transported the hospital. The driver's name and details on possible charges were not released.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
