The cruiser was on patrol in Whitehall, traveling about 20 mph on Wright Avenue near Pierce Avenue, when the girl ran out from between two parked vehicles and was struck about 3:50 p.m., Sgt. Mike Dillon said. Dillon would not release the name of the officer who was driving the cruiser.

Kayla Bowers, 15, identified the girl who was struck as Destiny Johnson, 10, who lives on Wright Avenue. Bowers said she is Destiny's foster sister and that Destiny was running across the street to get a drink of water at their house when she was struck by the westbound cruiser.

Destiny, who was alert after the crash, was taken by ambulance to Nationwide Children's Hospital. She was released after being treated.
