Chicago Officers Drive Into Gunfight, Make Arrest

After stopping their vehicle, the officers left on foot and chased a man holding a gun.

Chicago police officers arrested a man after they drove into a gunfight in the Far South Side's West Pullman neighborhood Monday night, authorities said.

About 8:35 p.m., officers driving in an unmarked car witnessed an exchange of gunfire near the intersection of 118th Street and South Stewart Avenue, said Patrick Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

After stopping their vehicle, officers left on foot and chased a man holding a gun, Camden said. At one point, the man turned and pointed the gun at police, drawing fire from at least one officer, Camden said.

The man was not struck and was taken into custody shortly after in a nearby backyard, Camden said.

Camden said the incident happened in the same area where officers were fired on last Friday.

"I know [officials say] crime is down, but in this one little part of the city, it doesn't seem to be down," Camden said. "Nor does it seem to be down in Englewood or anywhere else in this city.

Chicago police initially said the police officers came under fire, citing preliminary information.

Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer confirmed that no injuries were reported and that police arrested one person after the incident.
