Chicago police were fired upon by suspects at least twice on the South Side Thursday afternoon, but no officers were injured, authorities said.

Police News Affairs had no information on the attacks on police in the West Pullman and South Chicago neighborhoods by about 5 p.m.

In an attack about 4 p.m. near 119th Street and Stewart Avenue, Calumet District tactical officers were driving west on 119th Street when they saw two men or boys with guns near an alley parallel to Stewart, sources said.

An officer got out of the patrol car and the gunmen ran off, with the officer following one of them into an alley behind the 11900 block of South Stewart, sources said. The gunman hid behind a garage, then as the officer got close to him, came out from behind a garbage can and fired at the officer, missing the officer.

A gun was found, but it was believed to be the gun the other suspect--not the one who fired on the officer--had possessed, a source said. No one was in custody in the attack, sources said.

An earlier afternoon attack on police took place in the South Chicago neighborhood near 80th Street and Manistee Avenue, authorities said. Details of this attack on officers assigned to gang or narcotics work were not immediately available.
