Chicago Officer, Three Others Hurt During Pursuit

A police officer also sustained a minor injury during the pursuit Tuesday night.

Three people were hurt when the vehicle they were riding in flipped during a police chase that spanned several miles, authorities said.

A police officer also sustained a minor injury during the pursuit, which started about 11:30 p.m., Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The chase began in the 7700 block of South Sangamon Street when the vehicle's driver sped off after being stopped for a traffic violation, Alfaro said.

Police chased the vehicle from the site of the traffic stop, in the Gresham neighborhood, to the 8600 block of South Kingston Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood.

The vehicle's driver lost control in that block, and the vehicle landed on its side in a backyard, Alfaro said.

Three occupants were each taken to an area hospital and taken into police custody. Fire officials transported one person to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, one to John. H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and one to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva said.

Although police have said their injuries appeared to be minor, fire officials listed all three in serious-to-critical condition at the time they were transported.

The injured officer was also taken to a local hospital after injuring his hand.
