Police said the man leaped over the counter after being kicked out of the New Britain store.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- A man who had been kicked out of the Dunkin' Donuts in New Brite Plaza on Wednesday afternoon returned and attacked the store with an axe, police said.

Wilfred Levine, 63, of 28 Gilbert St., had been loitering in the store on East Main Street, according to a release from New Britain police. Employees asked him to leave.

But he soon returned -- with a full-size axe, police said. He leaped over the counter and said he was looking for the two employees who had just kicked him out.

Then he "smashed the inside of the store with his axe," went outside and smashed the store's windows, the release states.

When the first police officer arrived, Levine allegedly raised the axe as if to assault the officer, the release states. Other officers soon arrived. Levine was tasered and taken into custody.

Levine faces charges including criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, two counts of criminal attempt to assault police, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree criminal trespass, possession of a dangerous weapon, interfering with police, second-degree breach of peace and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Bail was set at $750,000.
