Conway Officer William McGary was struck by a motorist while directing traffic late Thursday night.

A Conway, Ark. police officer died Friday after being struck by a motorist the previous night.

Officer William McGary, 26, was directing traffic at the scene of a crash late Thursday on Dave Ward Drive when a Jeep Wrangler driven by Barry R. Strickland failed to yield to him, according to The Log Cabin Democrat.

The officer was wearing a reflective vest and was blocking traffic with the lights on his patrol car activated.

McGary was pinned between the right rear of his cruiser and Wrangler and had to be extricated.

He was flown to the Little Rock Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday.

Police say that Strickland was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

The 31-year-old had already faced a felony first degree battery charge, DWI and other traffic violations.

McGary had spent close to two years with the Conway Police Department
