NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A New Haven man was arrested after he allegedly almost ran over three officers, police said.
The incident unfolded after Officers Leonardo Soto, Ryan Macuirzynzki and Louis DeCrescenzo met on Franklin Street to address motor vehicle violations near the Farnham Court Public Housing Complex, police said. They spotted a red Subaru wagon without a front market plate.
The officers stepped into the road and signaled the male driver to stop, police spokesman Officer David Hartman said. The driver then allegedly accelerated toward the officers, who jumped out of the vehicle's path. The car left the complex and disappeared from their sight, according to police.
Soto spotted the vehicle about two hours later on Ferry Street and pulled the vehicle over on Pierpont Street. The driver was a woman and said that her friend had let her borrow the car, police said. She later said that her husband, Kenneth Riley, had been driving the car earlier, Hartman said.
The woman and several officers went to the apartment and searched for Riley who wasn't there, police said. Officers found Riley outside, hiding in the basement doorway.
During his arrest Riley said: "... it was me driving on Franklin Street... I have a suspended license and I didn't want to go to jail," according to police.
"Wish denied," police said in a release, and Riley was subsequently arrested. He is charged with three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, three counts of criminal attempt to commit assault on a police officer, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle under suspension, police said.
